CHARACTER

Name: Anthony Edward Stark
Canon: Iron Man (MCU)
Gender: Male
Age: 43
Wing Color: Red and Gold

Canon Point: Iron Man 3, immediately post the attack on his Malibu home, and he’s just been flung into the water.
Canon Point Explanation: It will leave Tony under the impression that he has come to some weird version of limbo, and he’ll still be dealing with his PTSD.
History: http://marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Iron_Man
http://marvel-movies.wikia.com/wiki/Anthony_Stark

Personality:
On first meeting, Tony often comes off as arrogant, above all else. But that’s intentional, because it’s part of the persona that he’s built for himself throughout the years. He’s smart, he’s suave, he’s rich, and he can get who or what he wants at the snap of his fingers, so why shouldn’t he be arrogant? He’s earned it, right? It’s a role that he’s played for almost his whole life, and what most people expect from him, and he doesn’t want to disappoint.

Playing a part has been something that Tony has been doing for as long as he can remember. When he was a child it was that of a child prodigy, and though it was obvious that he was that, he was always having to better it. He wanted to prove himself, to everyone he would say, though it was more than anything that he wanted to prove himself to his Father, to be praised by him for his work, more than being dismissed and told he could do better. What Howard may have seen as tough love, and pushing him to his best, Tony took as being cold and unloving, and though that soured the picture he had of his Dad, he put up a front, especially in front of the press, that they were a happy father and son duo, and his father did the same. It was about keeping up appearances, and in their roles, that would just become more and more important as time passed.

During his teenage years, he played to the expectations that were had of him as well. It was assumed by tabloids that he would be the type to party, to go to clubs despite being obviously underage, and in the later teens something of a player. If everyone already thought that that was how he was, why not act like it as well? It wasn’t as if pretending to not be that would change anything.

As he stepped into the role of CEO after his parents deaths, the playboy label had seemed to stick and so he worked to maintain it. It was fun for him too, after all, so he was hardly going to complain about it. There were a lot worse things he could be viewed as, and he was glad that he wasn’t.

Of course, to some people they found it all off putting, but for those few that manage to get through the layer of ice that coats him, they’ll find a far more interesting Tony Stark than what’s seen at first glance.

While it’s true that there is part of him that is arrogant, or rather that he has know-it-all tendencies, he would argue that he just doesn’t think other people should go on believing things that are wrong. If he can correct them, he’s just doing them a favour, even if the correction may seem harsh at the time. It’s one of the many odd ways that he can choose to show that he cares. And he does care. He cares fiercely, and though he may occasionally have some weird ways of showing it, whether it be a giant rabbit with an arc reactor in its chest, or bringing them something he knew he associated with them, he just forgot that they were allergic to it, he does try.

One thing that is obvious is that Tony Stark is a very brave man. Anyone who dons a persona of a superhero and who goes out and fights for the rights of the little people deserves to be called brave. While for Tony it may have originally stared as a personal vendetta, against the terrorists who were using his weapons on the people he had built them for, against the man who had sold all of it to them, and to the man who copied his tech to use it against him, he now sees that there’s something bigger out there. The attack on New York showed to Tony that they’re not alone in this world, and if what came through on that faithful day had happened without them being there, without The Avengers, who knows what could have happened? Sure, while he was fighting the terrorists in Afghanistan and the surrounding Middle Eastern countries he saved the lives of thousands of civilians, that had mostly been a by-product of what he was doing. After New York, it became front and centre that he needed to protect those who were unable to protect themselves.

Hand in hand with bravery comes loyalty. He is fiercely loyal to those who deserve his loyalty, his friends, and his teammates fall easily into this category, as do those who are innocent in times of war. He has seen the damage that is done, and though perhaps at first he didn’t think much of it, not in the days where he was the defence contractor, he was still always working towards trying to make amends for the wrong he was doing. Though some may say that it was guilt he was displaying there, that he knew what he was doing was wrong, he simply viewed it as making sure things were level. What he did had to be done, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t do things that could help, especially those that were touched by the war that was reigning on.

And that was one of many shows to Tony’s excellent sense of business. That was a role that he had been groomed for since boyhood, his father constantly reminding him that one day he would be taking over the family business, and what burdens would then be laid on his shoulders. He had to be prepared to be hated, and to be called terrible things. Tony had watched how it effected his father, who though he put on a steely front in public, sometimes he would catch him crumbled, replaying videos of Steve Rogers, of the atomic bomb droppings, or of napalm during the Vietnam war. There hadn’t been any balance then, only guilt had followed, but for Tony, when he could have medical advancements funded that would help any potential civilian victims of his weapons, he pushed until it went through.

For much of his life Tony was under the assumption that his father didn’t care about him. From what he remembered of him, he remembered a cold man, someone who showed little to no affection for his son, and who had gotten rid of him as soon as he could because he didn’t want him around. That in part turned him bitter towards the idea of the happy family ™, because he hadn’t experienced one. He loved his mother, but the lack of a father figure made a deep impression on Tony, and is in part to blame for his flaky nature towards relationships in the past. He doesn’t want to risk becoming the man his father was, and treating those meant to be loved the way he did. It was only after Fury dropped off the box of his Father’s and he started to see through the double life Howard had been living that he started to see him in a different light, which in turn set his own life in a different light, which would eventually lead to being open to a relationship with Pepper Potts.

At canon point Tony suffers from PTSD, and is something he has been suffering with on and off since his return from the caves in Afghanistan. Though it’s not as obvious until IM3, there is still an obvious aversion to sleep and rest, which could be excused as him having the need to work on the suits, but as seen in IM3, what happens when he finally does go to sleep can be violent and it makes sense that he would want to avoid it. Instead he often stays awake for days on end, and when he first does lay down to sleep, he has JARVIS wake him before he falls into REM sleep where the dreams could effect him. It stems from realising just how human he is, and even more after the events of New York, not only having battled a Norse God and Aliens, but seeing his teammates and what they’re equipped to do compared to him. He and Bruce, after all, are the only two that aren’t trained to deal with these kinds of situations, but Bruce changes into a giant green monster so he has protection that Tony doesn’t. And those thoughts, though he can suppress them during the day, there’s no escaping them in his dreams.

(I wrote the strengths and weaknesses bit first and I feel like I mentioned a lot and I don’t want to sound repetitive, but if there is anything you want cleared up, please let me know and I can do that!)

Strengths
Physical:
Tony Stark is shown that while he is a “normal human”, at least compared to some of his teammates, he is still physically fit, and works to keep himself in shape, even before the donning of the Iron Man mantle. Not only from working out, but also from his work which, when he chooses to get his hands dirty, can be very physical.
• Shown to have a home gym.
• Boxing practice with Happy Hogan.
• Consumes green smoothies with some regularity in both Iron Man and Iron Man 2
• Building a particle accelerator from scratch in his home.

With his suit, he gains immensely more strength than he would usually have. There are multiple instances where he is shown to lift heavy objects, and swing them around. With the suit he is naturally also a lot heavier, which allows him to use his body weight as an aid in combat. The suit also provides protection against returned fire, but isn’t impenetrable
• He can pick up a barbell with weights attached with ease and use it like a baseball bat.
• During the freeing of Gulmira he punches a man in the stomach, sending him flying into a building metres away
• During the Monaco attack, he kicks the car Pepper and Happy are in out of harms way.

Mental:
Mental strengths are Tony’s strong suits, really, and what gives him the upper edge that he has. What he lacks in physical strength he makes up and more in mental strengths, and thus far that has worked out rather well for him

Intelligence is by far and large Tony’s most prominent and significant strength, and what has brought him to where he is today. Though his IQ is never mentioned, it is quite obvious that it is high, likely off the charts, really. From what it seems, he is mostly likely heavily “right brained”, with skills in numbers, logic, languages the strongest. However, he is still creative as is necessary to come up with the sheer number of Iron Man suits he has, let alone how many projects he’s come up with over the years, and intuitive, especially when it comes to mechanics and engineering.
• Managing to trick his captors in Afghanistan to bring him what he needed to build both the miniature arc reactor and the first Iron Man suit, and keeping the wool over their eyes throughout the project.
• Building his first circuit board at 4, first engine at 11 and graduating from MIT at 17
• Basically everything.

Creativity/Innovativeness is closely connected to his intelligence, as his job has always demanded that he be innovative and creative with creating not only new weapons, but also expanding on other areas of Stark Industries. Even the Arc Reactor can be swept under this, both from having it power Stark Industries to Stark Tower, and not to mention the one in his chest.
• The entire range of Iron Man suits, from the standard original to all the members of the “Iron Legion
• Dropping weapons from Stark Industries repertoire, and managing to bring it back to a top level company without what was once its prime source of income.

Businessman/Leader Tony is, from the start, clearly a natural born leader. People follow his word, especially in heated situations. Also of note is how far he’s taken Stark Industries, bringing it first to become the main defence contractor for the USA. He was young when he took over, just 21, but still kept the company afloat, and thriving really.
• During The Avengers, he is the one to first take the helm during the battle of New York, giving instructions that are followed despite earlier tension between the team
• He has only risen on the Forbes list of wealthiest.

Other strengths of note are curiosity, generosity, determination and dedication.

Emotional:
While many may not think Tony a particularly emotional person, that itself is one of his strengths. He keeps his cards close to his chest, which means that he doesn’t give people a lot of room to attack him on a personal level, and when they try, he deflects them with a natural ease as they’re mostly superficial attacks.

Courage/Bravery are perhaps to of the most prevalent emotional strengths that Tony has. It takes guts to go against a team of terrorists that have kidnapped you and threaten to kill you multiple times. It takes guts to go after them to take revenge after. It takes guts to be willing to fight against someone who clearly out-powers you, because you know you’re the one they’re after and no one else should be harmed. And it takes guts to go up against a God. And those are all things Tony has done. Some may say it’s a lack of self-perseverance, it’s not. It’s that he is willing to sacrifice himself for others, and won’t hesitate to do so if that’s what it will take to save those who deserve it.
• After he learns that the Ten Rings are using Stark Weapons, he goes after them, and often he is outnumbered dozens to one.
• In the attack of Monaco, he is seen trying to fight against Vanko even before he has his suit on.
• During the battle of New York, he flies a nuclear missile up into the portal opened by the Chitauri, knowing fully that he was unlikely to survive it.
• Even though he was essentially doomed by the palladium poisoning, he never stopped working towards maybe, just maybe finding something that could save him.

Love/Caring While many people may not think Tony particularly loving, it’s certainly not something that is given out easily, those he does care about the feeling is strong. While he may not be the greatest at showing how much he cares, he does try to show it in his own way. Unfortunately, sometimes that’s taken the wrong way.
• Happy – has kept him in his service for years, promoting him to being his personal bodyguard/driver. When he sees what happens to him in IM3, and knowing that essentially he is the cause of it, it sparks him to invite the Mandarin to come to him, because he wants to take revenge.
• Pepper – making her CEO is perhaps the first sign, it showing just how much trust he has in her capabilities. And then of course later their whole relationship is pretty obvious. Though it took him a long time to come around to finally admitting to it, taking that leap to finally accept what was a long time coming, it was always meant to be.
• Rhodey – Rhodey was the first person he wanted to show the Iron Man suit, and (per the IM novelisation) who he originally wanted to fly it. He knew that above anyone else, Rhodey would be the best to pilot it besides himself, and he trusted that he would understand the importance, which is why when he makes it seem like Tony is wrong in giving up the weapons contract he changes his mind (he had thought Rhodey was different, that they were friends, not that he too just wanted him for his weapons). Then later of course he lets him keep the IM suit he takes, and even further develops one for him personally.
• Obediah – Perhaps an unusual choice to add to the list, but Obediah seemed like something of a father figure to Tony, who helped him after he lost his own, and who helped him into the role of CEO at Stark in the beginning. He was his right hand man on the job, and so the betrayal that followed was far greater than just an employee stealing some tech, it felt personal.

Loyal is both one of the things that Tony considers himself to be, but also one of the things that he values most. Loyalty is important in his life, because of his stature he can’t afford to be betrayed or backstabbed by those closest too him. And that is, perhaps, in part why he can seem wary of people on first meeting, because he doesn’t know if he can trust them. And in return he is fiercely loyal to those who he has deemed worthy of it. His friends, as mentioned above, as well as his teammates, but also, in some ways humanity in general, because if not, why else would he be a superhero?

Other emotional strengths worth a quick mention are fairness, social responsibility, and integrity

Weaknesses
Physical:
As mentioned above, Tony is just a normal human with no superhuman abilities that are natural to him. That means that he can, without the Iron Man suit, somewhat easily be killed or injured in battle, but also outside he can fall ill and the likes. He needs food and rest as anyone, though he does attempt to push the limits, especially when it comes to rest. If he for some reason is lacking in those, it will effect his ability to perform.
• Frequently injured during battle, though so far they’ve all been easily recoverable injuries and nothing lasting, save the origin of the arc reactor.
• Poisoned by the palladium from the arc reactor v I leaking into his bloodstream.

Mental:
His mental weaknesses are, perhaps, some things that he would at least say are strengths, but to others, they are viewed negatively. Most of them have to do with how he holds himself, and how others may see that.

Arrogance Tony is smart, and he is fully aware of that fact. He’s not going to hide that he is more than likely the smartest man in the room at any given moment, and if someone tries to argue/attack him, he’ll have no problem putting them in their place. And sometimes he says this that one could consider distasteful just for his own amusement.
• When Christine Everheart attempts to throw him off his game to get a usable quote on him, he is very clear in not using her name, addressing her instead by her school in a condescending tone, and throwing what she was trying to at him right back at her.
• In the IM2 novelisation, when it’s announced that Justin Hammer, the current weapons expert and primary defence contractor is entering the room, Tony throws out "Let the minutes reflect that I observe Mr. Hammer entering the chamber and am wondering if and when an expert will also be in attendance.”
• Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist

Stubborn is something that while Tony will deny that he is, it is clear he is quite so. While he could spin it in a way that says he just doesn’t like to give up, it is not necessarily always a good thing that he is stubborn. He simply doesn’t like others telling him what to do, and if they try to, he’ll dig his heels in harder against it.
• Didn’t tell anyone that the palladium was killing him, and even after it was obvious that Nick Fury knew, he still attempted to deny it.
• Reluctant to join the Avengers until absolutely necessary, because he didn’t consider himself a team player. Even during the beginning of Loki’s attack, he wasn’t fully a team member, overtaking the music system on the quinjet and blasting in on his own during the Germany capture.

Chaotic While others may find the way Tony works or keeps his lab chaotic, he likes to say that it’s organized chaos. As long as he knows exactly where what he needs is, why should it matter if anyone else does? His thoughts are also somewhat chaotic in his mind, but that is mostly because he has so many all the time, and sometimes they can be a little difficult to corral. He wants to do everything but there just aren’t enough hours in the day to allow that.
• Though not a complete mess, the times we’ve seen his home lab, things are often lying around without too much order (less so in IM3, however, though that could be through Pepper). On top of that, he frequently destroys the lab during testing of his suits.
• When he needs to build a particle accelerator he basically destroys his house a little, including using a prototype of a Captain America shield to make one of the pipes level.

Other weaknesses that could be considered are blunt and impatient

Emotional:
Tony’s emotional weaknesses are what he works the hardest to keep hidden, because they are what would be most effective to use against him. Because of that there are many that seem to think him cold and unfeeling, which is far from the truth. It’s just with the years, it’s an easier front to put up a wall then show how someone’s words or actions may hurt (the aforementioned Christine Everheart exchange is a prime example of such).

Alcohol Dependency Although it’s not confirmed 100% in film that Tony is an alcoholic, the novelisation implies it heavier. Alcohol is a numbing agent for Tony, and has been for quite some time. His drinking started young due to social norms, and these days is just a standard for him. When he’s out there’s a drink in hand, and often when he’s home too. And as he deals with his PTSD, when he actually does sleep, though he tries to avoid that, the alcohol helps his mind stay settled.
• In IM2 it is quite heavily featured, most notably the birthday party he throws for himself, putting on the suit, and then trying to beat up his best friend.

Distrustful/Issues with trust There aren’t many people that Tony has truly shown himself fully too. Rhodey and Pepper might be the two closest, there are still things he has hidden from them throughout the years. While he likes to tell himself that he’s doing it for their own good, it could also be seen as not being sure if they can be trusted to react the way he expects or wants to. Humans are a lot more unpredictable than robots. He has been betrayed and lied to too many times, both by people close to him, and ones who have hardly mattered to not think that there are separate intentions always lurking.
• Was suspicious of Nick Fury and SHIELD, and hacked their system to find that he was indeed correct in the assumptions, and that they were keeping something from them
• Didn’t tell Pepper that he was dying.
• Obediah Stane sold his weapons from right under his nose and orchestrated to even have him kidnapped, and he never suspected a thing, which has lead to him being warier now
• [on Howard] ”He was cold, calculating, never told me he loved me, never even told me he liked me, so it's a bit hard for me to digest that he said the whole future is riding on me thing, I don't get that! You're talking about a man whose happiest day of his life was shipping me off to boarding school.”

Anything else?: I…am not quite sure. Having him bring along the Iron Man suit would be too easy, of course, so I wouldn’t want to do that. The only thing he really needs would be the arc reactor, but that’s a part of him, so as long as he’s allowed to keep that special item, it’s all good.

SAMPLES (ALL SAMPLES MUST BE SET IN THE LUCETIVERSE)

First Person:
test flight

Third Person:
There was part of Tony that still wasn’t quite sure that he wasn’t dead. Even though he had never believed that there was going to be an afterlife, that seemed a whole lot more logical than the explanation that he had been given by one of the other inhabitants of the village, or whatever you might want to call it. He did have wings after all, and even though the few times he had considered the possibility of a heaven and a hell, he certainly hadn’t thought that he would end up on the side that had the wings. Although he was a little disappointed in those, they were small, and didn’t seem to have much use, but they didn’t seem to be going anywhere, so he supposed that he was stuck with them and would just have to make the best out of it.

He had been directed to the welcome centre and given the whole you’re stuck here, deal with it spiel, and while he had come to accept that part (because why would you stay unless you had to?), he didn’t believe that there wasn’t a way to get back. He had heard rumours of people leaving, back to when and where they had originally come from, only to be brought back again months or years later, and so surely there had to be a way to make it back and forth. He just hadn’t had a chance to figure out how yet.

For the time being, however, Tony had decided that no matter where he was, and why he was brought here if that was in fact the case, it was probably better than where he could have been “back home”, as people tended to call it. The last thing he remembered were the helicopters that were attacking his home. The bombs that were raining in destroying everything. Seeing Dum-E mourning over You, before he (deny as he may, Tony had feelings for his stupid robots) slid over the edge. The building had opened to reveal the last helicopter, and as he hung onto the concrete, it was as though everything had slowed down to a crawl. It was the sensation that people said came at the end of life, right before you died. His life had briefly flashed before his eyes as everything else had slowed around him, but then it was all too fast again, and there had been another explosion and he was sliding, and then he had hit the water. After that he had woken up sputtering on the beach with wings on his back and confusion in his head.

The bright side, if you could call it that, was that there were at least some people he knew here. Steve and Thor, hell, even Loki, it was better than not having anyone, and so he had come to reluctantly accept the current hand that fate had dealt to him.

The one thing he did quite enjoy about it were the journals. They were practical, and the capabilities they had, they were practically tablets, and he could get on board with that. If they had the technology to do this, he was interested in seeing if he would be able to build a new suit. Steve had his shield and Thor his hammer, he wanted to have his special ability too. While he figured that out, he spent time in the vast library they had. If nothing else, he would have the chance to learn something new every day, and who knew when that would come in handy?
